Is your class up to the challenge?

For one term your class must become a publishing house that develops, creates and publishes a book. They then spend time learning to market the book by building a website, creating advertising and publicity campaigns and finally giving a school/class presentation on it. All sale proceeds go back to the class and so does the fun and excitement of learning literacy by participating in a real world program.

Please read below for a brief overview of the 4 elements of Exploring Literacy.

1st Element

Reading and Writing for Literacy: Write, Edit, Illustrate, Format and Publish their Book

2nd Element

Web Literacy: Design, set up and write the copy for a website, based on the book. Insert images of the book and publish and unpublish pages as you wish. (Unpublished pages are viewed by the class only, whereas published pages can be viewed on the worldwide net)

3rd Element

Media Literacy: thinking in terms of marketing and publicity for the book. Creating radio ads, posters, TV commercials and other ideas for advertising and publicity based on the book.

4th Element

Presentation Skills Literacy :Organising, creating and presenting an oral presentation to the school/class. Expressing ideas, milestones achieved and presenting different details of the project. Finally showcasing the actual book produced. This presentation can also be filmed by one of the students or a parent volunteer or teacher and will remain as a record of the entire project.

Since literacy can no longer be confined to books, our program incorporates media, web and presentation skills to help students become better communicators and to develop self confidence, no matter what innate talents they have. The class subdivides into committees much like a publishing house and in that way each student has an active role to play in the creation of a successful publishing program. At the same time, the onus is less on the teacher and more on the students to organize and complete the program. Furthermore, our easy to follow steps are worked out week by week, and make it easy for a teacher to run this program.
