In 2004, doctors stopped conventional treatment for his cancer, and told his family to take it a day at a time. The money raised so far to our knowledge has been $2000 from two different organizations.
- Part of the proceeds from the sales of Hope and the Dragon and Matthew's Story - the documentary - go for cancer research. Matthew will be donating a cheque of $2000 from book sales till September. A further cheque for the balance of 2007 will be released in 2008.
- Children's Health & Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan, will receive a cheque of $ 450 as part proceeds from the sale of Hope and the Dragon.
- Organisations could buy Hope and the Dragon for inclusion in children's cancer kits, at a higher than usual discounted rate. In effect using the money that was earmarked for fundraising, to buy more books.
